We understand the decision to rehome your pet can be a difficult one. We are here to support you along the way. We offer many resources from low-cost clinics to our pet food pantry to assist owners in keeping their pets in the home. As space allows, we do accept new pets at our shelter from residents of surrounding counties, not just Catawba. Once you have completed the steps outlined below a Humane Society of Catawba County staff member will contact you within 72 hours with further instructions.

If you need to immediately surrender your pet due to safety reasons or in case of an emergency, please contact your local Animal Control facility.

We require a relinquishment fee of $50 on intake that will be put toward general care until the animal is adopted.

  • Include the following in the email: reason for surrendering, age of animal, breed, medical history, and a photo(s) of the animal(s) you wish to surrender.
  • All dogs will undergo a dog assessment at the shelter before we will commit to accepting the pet.
  • OWNER SURRENDERS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
  • All dogs must arrive at our facility on a leash, and puppies in a carrier/safe enclosure.

  • All cats or kittens must be friendly in order to be surrendered. We do not accept feral cats through owner surrender.

  • All cats/kittens must arrive at our facility in a carrier/safe enclosure.

Due to limitations of space, Humane Society of Catawba County is not able to accommodate every request that we receive to take in animals. Below you will find a link that lists local rescues and shelters who may be able to assist you.
