Humane Society Of Catawba County offers low cost Spay/Neuter services through our SNIP Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic located at 3224 20th Ave. SE, Hickory. Call 828-464-2FIX (2349) for information. Come to the shelter to schedule your appointment.

There are thousands and thousands of companion animals that end up being euthanized in county shelters every year due to pet over-population.  By spaying/neutering, you can help reduce the number of unwanted pets.

Your pet will also be less at risk for health problems when you have them spayed and neutered.  It really is important, for many reasons! (Please feel free to call us or your veterinarian for more information).

For more information, you can email the SNIP Clinic administrator: snip@catawbahumane.org

HSCC is Celebrating Spay Day USA

Tuesday February 23, 2009: a day to address pet overpopulation

U.S. animal shelters euthanize over four million cats and dogs each year – about one every eight seconds. These animals are often the litters of family pets and some are purebred animals. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats and it is a proven way to reduce the number of homeless animals.

ew Services Available!

Microchip Your Pet

We now offer pet microchipping for $20.  Bring your pets to our facility Tuesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. and we will microchip your animals and register them for you. There is no maintenance fee to keep your pets registered.

The microchip is a tiny computer chip which has an identification number programmed into it and is encapsulated within a biocompatible material. The whole device is small enough to fit inside a hypodermic needle and can be simply injected under the skin of our pets, where it will stay for the life of the animal. This provides a permanent, positive identification which cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed - a safe, simple and inexpensive way to protect your pet if lost.

“Having your pet microchipped is a part of responsible pet ownership”, said Alyssa Taylor, HSCC’s Animal Services Manager. “Collars and tags get lost, but with microchipping, a pet will always be identifiable.  We scan all animals for microchips upon intake.”

N.E.A.T. Treatment

The N.E.A.T. Treatment is a package of services you can add when your pet is in the SNIP clinic for a spay or neuter procedure. We will trim their nails, clean their ears, have their anal glands expressed and their teeth will be brushed. All of the services will be done while your pet is under anesthesia. The cost of this additional service package is only $15.

How It Works:

1.  You will need to fill out a carbon copy registration form for each pet you wish to have spayed/neutered.  This form is only available at HSCC during business hours Tuesday-Friday 12-5:30 p.m. or Saturday 12-4 p.m. *We do not schedule appointments on the phone*

2.  You must pre-pay (cash or major credit card only) in order to reserve your pets' appointment. Space is limited.  NO REFUNDS.

PetsMart Grant

Humane Society Of Catawba County  and SNIP Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic have joined  with PetsMart to offer spay and nuter services  to those folks in our community who need further assistance to have their companion animals "fixed." Clients must provide proof of any of the following in order to qualify for this grant:

*unemployment
*Receive Social Security  income ONLY
*Receive Medicaid(NOT MEDICARE)
*Receive WIC
*Have proof of foreclosure
*Receive Supplemented  Security Income

You must come to our Humane Society during operating hours(we do not schedule appointments over the phone) and fill out the paperwork and prepay the $10 copay in cash(you do not need to bring your pet for this).  The copay includes the spay and neuter(for animals that are less than 75 lbs) and a rabies vaccination. If your pet already has a current rabies vaccine we will need to see the certificate as proof(NOT the tag) when you come to schedule the appointment.

If your pet is over 75 lbs or if you would like additional services i.e other vaccinations, testing, or if your pet is pregnant at the time of surgery, etc. There will be additional payment due at pickup time.

You will drop off your pet between 8:00-8:30 am on your scheduled appointment date and pickup that same afternoon.

SNIP is happy to be part of the solution to the problem of pet overpopulation in our area. The PetsMart grant has allowed us to reach out to more members of our community during these difficult economic times.

This great oppertunity is open to anyone who qualifies!

We are limiting this grant to one pet per family.

When It Happens:

YOU MUST HAVE AN APPOINTMENT!

(Please read "How it Works")

Bring your pet to HSCC between 8-8:30 a.m. on your pre-scheduled surgery day. We are not able to accept pets any earlier than that. You must wait for an HSCC staff member to check-in your cat or dog.  Make sure your pet has not eaten since 10 p.m. the night before.

Dogs must be on leashes, cats must be in carriers, labelled with pet and owners name! If you don't have one you may purchase a cardboard carrier for $7 and pick it up when registering. (HSCC recommends that all cats travel in carriers when being transported...for their safety AND yours!)

Pick Up: You should be able to pick up your pet by 5 p.m. on the same day. Call 828-464-2FIX to check on your pet after 2:00 p.m.

*SNIP Inclement Weather Policy-SNIP Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic will be closed if Catawba County Schools are DELAYED or CLOSED due to inclement weather conditions......Your appointment will be rescheduled.*

Note: The shelter closes at 5:30 p.m.  Animals may NOT be left at HSCC overnight!

IMPORTANT!!

If you do not have a certificate for past rabies vaccine for each pet having surgery, for an additional $8, we are required to give your pet a vaccine at the time of your pets' spay/neuter surgery. You may also add additional vaccines, heart worm tests and Feline Leukemia/FIV tests for an additional fee.

Please ask a HSCC staff member about services available when you schedule your appointment.
