HSCC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
Rescue
Thousands of dogs and cats are destroyed at Catawba County Animal Control each year. Many of these animals were adoptable and would have made loving pets. HSCC’s Animal Services is permitted to enter the county shelter and rescue adoptable animals. A temperament test of each animal is a first priority. After rescue, all cats and dogs are examined, de-wormed, tested, vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
HSCC also takes in animals from residents of Catawba County. There is an
Owner Surrender Procedure for animals needing new homes for various reasons. We request a $50 donation at surrender.
We are
NOT allowed to take in stray animals. County Law and Regulations require strays to be reported and/or taken to Catawba County Animal Control for owners to reclaim.
Adoptions
The public is welcome to come to our kennels during our operating hours to meet and apply to adopt a pet.
A thorough adoption application must be completed and an adoption interview held with a trained Adoption Counselor prior to any animal being approved for adoption.
Adoptions Include:
Spay or Neuter
Vaccinations current
De-worming
Heartworm test (dogs) & receiving heartworm preventative
Feline Leukemia Test (cats)
Micro chipping
Free vet exam certificate
A small bag of age appropriate food
A Friend for Life!
Spay and Neuter
All HSCC animals available for adoption have been
spayed/neutered.
This policy sets an example for the community and makes pets better suited for adoption.
Low cost sterilization is offered through the
on-site Spay/Neuter Clinic.
Appointments and prepayment must be made in person.
Proof of a Rabies vaccination is required.
Other vaccines, testing and services are also offered as part of the spay/neuter appointment.
Irresponsible and uncontrolled breeding of dogs and cats causes the sad situation at the county shelter and the Humane Society. Only by preventing the number of litters that are produced can we permanently reduce the pain and suffering of unwanted animals.
Micro chipping
We now offer pet microchipping for $20. Bring your pets to our facility Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. and we will microchip your animals and register them for you. There is no maintenance fee to keep your pets registered.
The microchip is a tiny computer chip which has an identification number programmed into it and is encapsulated within a biocompatible material. The whole device is small enough to fit inside a hypodermic needle and can be simply injected under the skin of our pets, where it will stay for the life of the animal. This provides a permanent, positive identification which cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed - a safe, simple and inexpensive way to protect your pet if lost.
“Having your pet microchipped is a part of responsible pet ownership”, said Alyssa Taylor, HSCC’s Animal Services Manager. “Collars and tags get lost, but with microchipping, a pet will always be identifiable. We scan all animals for microchips upon intake.”
Rabies Clinics
HSCC offers Rabies vaccines the 3rd Saturday of the month at our facility from 2-4pm. Rabies vaccines are $8.00.
“Well Pet” Vaccine Clinics
Usually offered the first Friday of each month from 3-5:30 p.m. Your pets MUST have an appointment. Call HSCC @ 828 464-8878 to schedule. Healthy pets may attend these clinics to receive annual vaccines and testing.
Pet Food Pantry
Dog and Cat food is given to pet owners showing proof of need to assist in the feeding of their pets. The Pantry is usually open from 10-12 on the last Saturday of each month. Our goal is to keep these pets in their loving homes instead of surrendering them to shelters. All the food is donated by local companies and stores or by individuals wanting to help.

Remember Fund
Remember, celebrate or honor a special animal or human friend with a donation to the Remember Fund.
Your contribution will help save the lives of homeless animals in Catawba County. Your gift will be acknowledged with a beautiful card sent to the person or animal’s guardian being honored.
Cards may be purchased at the shelter during operating hours or you may send a check ($25 or more) with the recipient information.
Please include: Name and address of person to whom card should be sent. Specify if honoree is a person, dog, cat, or other and the occasion being honored. Also, include your name, address and phone number.
Guardian Angel
You can be the Guardian Angel that provides care for a homeless animal at HSCC.
With your sponsorship gift of $225, you will receive a photo and information about the homeless dog or cat that you helped rescue, nurture and give the gift of a “forever home”. You are welcome to come visit your sponsored pet at our shelter! We will inform you when it is adopted.
Often people who care about the plight of homeless animals are overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem. And it’s true that no one person can save them all; but if you can make a difference in the life of even one animal, let alone hundreds each year, then your volunteer time is invaluable.
Thank you for your continued support in 2010.
